Mastering Reading Time with Bilingual Deaf and Hard of Hearing children

A powerful workshop series that moves beyond surface-level strategies and taps into what truly supports a bilingual deaf child's language and literacy growth!

Here's the thing about reading with deaf and hard of hearing kids...

It should feel natural.

It should feel intuitive.

It should feel easy.

But for many parents and professionals in this space - it just doesn't feel that way.

 And here's why...

We know reading is important for these kids. We know it's the cornerstone for long-term language and literacy success - but no-one's actually being given a clear roadmap for how to effectively read  to a bilingual deaf and hard of hearing child.

Often all we're given are the same typical reading strategies that we would use with hearing kids. But the truth is: these simply aren't enough within the deaf and hard of hearing context.

This workshop is that roadmap.

Whether you're a parent raising a bilingual deaf child or a professional supporting families, this workshop will provide essential, actionable strategies tailored specifically for deaf and hard of hearing kids on the bilingual journey. We'll be diving below the surface-level stuff, so we can finally look into the deeper elements of reading that guarantees to move the needle for our deaf and hard of hearing kids.

Over three live sessions with me (an experienced Teacher of the Deaf and total reading nerd) you will learn the what and the how of my favourite and most effective signed and spoken reading strategies, and have access to me every step of the way, for real-time questions and troubleshooting!

Strategies that have been proven time and time again to not only work, but truly catapult a deaf child's vocab, language and reading engagement to the next level (yes even for our disengaged little ones!)

Workshop 1

Rethinking How We Read to Bilingual Deaf Kids: Setting the Foundations.

In this first session, we’ll dive into why traditional reading strategies just don’t work for deaf and hard of hearing children, especially those raised bilingually. You'll learn the key elements needed for success and how to shift your approach to foster long-term reading outcomes. By understanding the unique needs of bilingual deaf kids, you’ll feel confident about your next steps in making reading an enriching experience for your child or student.

Workshop 2:

Effective Strategies to Support Critical Thinking, Meaning-Making and Comprehension Skills

In this session, you’ll discover real, practical strategies to teach your child or student how to engage with a story on a deeper level. From building vocabulary to supporting inferencing, metalinguistic awareness and theory of mind, we’ll explore ways to go beyond just "looking at the pictures." or "reading the words". With a focus on making meaning clear and explicit for these kids, you’ll walk away with effective techniques for building comprehension, vocab and long-term critical thinking skills.

Workshop 3:

Enhancing Engagement & Building Lifelong Literacy Habits

Keeping a deaf and hard of hearing child engaged in reading, can be a common challenge.

In this session, you’ll learn how to implement strategies that not only keep children interested but also set the foundation for lifelong literacy. From interactive questioning, internal monologue modelling and deeper character development strategies, you’ll leave with a personalised toolkit to apply both at home and in the classroom - ensuring that reading time is both enjoyable and impactful!

This isn’t about doing it by the book (pun intended!)

It’s about reading in a way that feels easy, intuitive but also packs a punch when it comes to long-term outcomes for these kids.

Whether you're a professional or a parent in the field, I want you to leave this workshop series feeling...

  • Genuinely excited about reading time with your deaf or hard of hearing child or student
