The Power of Action in Deaf Inclusion

As I sit down to write this blog post, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact of action – no matter how small – when it comes to the inclusion of our little deaf individuals. It's one thing for us to express willingness and good intentions about being "inclusive," but it's an entirely different story to "walk the walk" and actively implement the changes needed for deaf and hard of hearing individuals to truly thrive.

A Personal Journey

I've spent many years advocating for the inclusion of deaf students in their school settings. But beyond my advocacy work, I've had the privilege of witnessing my own deaf son, Frank, absolutely flourish in his learning environment, thanks to the tireless efforts and genuine inclusion practiced by his educators and support staff.

A Welcoming Environment

Every time I step into Frank's early learning centre, I'm greeted by the warm embrace of Auslan and inclusion. From the welcome sign in Auslan at the entrance to the educators signing "good morning" and checking in on him, Auslan is seamlessly woven into the fabric of the centre. Signs and displays adorn every room, ensuring that Frank – and every other deaf child – has equitable access to language, just like their hearing peers.

The Importance of Inclusion

While these gestures may seem small to some, they speak volumes about the unwavering commitment of Frank's educators to create an inclusive environment where every child feels a sense of belonging. It's not too much to expect our deaf children to have access and feel like valued members, not mere visitors, in their own learning environment. It's about levelling the playing field and ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to thrive.

As we celebrate the power of action and the importance of inclusion, let's remember the incredible potential of every child – regardless of their abilities. Together, let's continue to make strides towards a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive.
